Used cooking oil
Also known as UCO (Used Cooking Oil – LER Code 200125), used cooking oil is often improperly disposed of down household drains or sinks, when it could instead be recycled and converted into a fully sustainable biofuel. We should always remember that one litre of oil discharged into the sea can contaminate up to 1,000 litres of water.
To recover this used vegetable oil, a collection system operates directly with the main users of this product, including catering companies, industrial kitchens, residential communities, schools, hospitals and the wider HORECA sector (hotels, restaurants and cafés).
Once collected, the oil is recycled and undergoes a cleaning and purification process. It is then treated to remove all impurities and moisture. The resulting processed used oil is subsequently converted into biodiesel at our facilities.
Biodiesel offers several advantages over other fuels, but its main benefit is that it reduces pollution and helps extend the service life of vehicle engines.
In some municipalities across the Canary Islands, household collection services are available through the so-called “orange containers”, where residents can dispose of their used frying oil. To ensure these systems operate effectively, greater public awareness of the importance of recycling is essential.
In this regard, we would like to acknowledge not only those members of the public who have become aware of the importance of recycling, but also the commitment of public authorities to the information and logistical efforts being carried out across the Canary Islands through awareness campaigns and the installation of orange containers for the collection and recycling of this type of waste.
Nevertheless, we understand that currently only around 25% of the used vegetable oil generated in the Canary Islands is being collected. This means that there is still considerable room for improvement, particularly when it comes to raising public awareness and encouraging the proper recycling of this valuable resource.

Logistics
Atlantic Biofuels is strategically located in the El Goro Industrial Park, in the municipality of Telde, Gran Canaria, Canary Islands. This privileged location provides easy access to the main distribution and collection hubs for both raw materials and finished products, locally, nationally and throughout Europe.
The plant is also centrally located in relation to the island’s main raw material collectors. We work directly with a dedicated transport company responsible for the collection of used cooking oil, as well as the transportation of finished product (biodiesel) and by-products (glycerine).
